Glossary

Page history last edited by Tombolo 7 years, 6 months ago

This page seeks to define all terms and keywords in the game.

Ability: A special effect a Merc can have on a match, usually by using a Red Orb during the Ability Phase.

Attackers: The team whose terrain was NOT chosen, which determines their placement on the terrain.

Blue Orb: A resource used to activate Upgrades.  Goes away at the end of the turn if not used.

Construct: Goes to the Construct Area instead of the Play Area when played, thus staying in play for the rest of the game to provide some sort of ongoing effect or ability that can be used every turn.

Defenders: The team whose terrain WAS chosen, which determines their placement on the terrain.

Draw (or +X Cards): To draw cards from the top of one's deck, and immediately play them.  In the case where order of play matters, the player drawing cards may choose the order in which to play them.  However, all drawn cards must be played.

Free Ability: An ability that does not require use of Red Orbs, but is still actively activated, unlike Passive Abilities.  Usually involves some sort of decision on the player's part.

Gain: To add a copy of a card to one's discard pile. (unless specified otherwise)

GP (or gold): A resource used to purchase new cards from the Pool.  Goes away at the end of the turn if not used.

KO: To remove a Merc from battle, and discard its card from the Play Area.  KO'd Mercs do not take part in the turn's fight, and are not eligible to activate abilities and upgrades, are not targetable by abilities, and are generally not able to interact further with the turn.  Effects or abilities that have already been used and are still applicable still take effect if the Merc is KO'd.

Match: The actual fight between two teams, voted on by outsiders or other players to determine a winner.

Mercenary (or Merc): The fighters that form the core of your deck and take part in the actual matches.

Passive Ability: An ability that is always automatically in effect, and thus does not require manual activation or Red Orb usage.

Permanent Pool: A selection of cards (to do: fill in) that are always in the Pool.  Unlike the Pool, these may be gained more than once in a turn, and are not part of the Randomizer Deck, nor do they ever leave the Pool.

Physical Format: A variant for face to face play.  Cards are printed out and physically interacted with, requiring some minor mechanical changes.

Play Area: Where cards go when they are played.  They are discarded at the end of the turn.

Pool: Six cards that are drawn from the Randomizer Deck at the start of each turn.  These cards are the same for every player, and are eligible for purchase and other interactions.

Randomizer Deck: Contains infinite copies of (almost) every card in the game, from which are drawn Pools for each turn.  In Physical format, only contains one copy each.  Cards do not leave the Randomizer Deck (or Pool) unless otherwise specified- when gaining a card, one actually gains a copy.

Red Orb: A resource used to activate Abilities.  Goes away at the end of the turn if not used.

Remodel: To trash a card in order to receive a better card from the pool.  This will usually be accompanied by further detail, but by default, this happens during the end phase, targets the card of your choice in your play area ("Remodel Any"), and gains a card costing up to 1+the cost of the trashed card from the Pool (Remodel 1).

Standard Format: The intended method of play.  Large numbers of players play over the course of weeks or months via online forum, with the assistance of at least one admin.  There are no physical cards; rather, the concept of "cards" is a construct to provide an aid to visualizing the game mechanics.

Upgrade: A change to a Merc, usually activated by using a Blue Orb during the Ability Phase.

Terrain: The setting in which a Match takes place.  Selected at random from the Terrains listed on each participating Merc.

Trash: To remove from the game entirely.

Voter: One who is able to vote on Matches.  Ideally there will be several.  Depending on the needs of the group, the Voters may consist of other players who are not involved in the Match being voted on, or on outside third parties, or some combination thereof.  This decision should be made before the start of the game.
